Thoughts:
DOET took me back to my school days. It felt like it was a textbook. I almost wished hastily that I should give an exam based on it. Nevertheless, it’s a great book for anyone trying to get into designing. The concepts in this book are intended for designing all kinds of products (including physical ones), but they apply to the UX of software products as well. As said in the book, things might change, but people don’t.
Notes:
Chapter One: The Psycopathology of Everyday Things
Two most important characteristics of good design:
- Discoverability:
- Figuring out possible performable activities and where to perform them
- Understanding:
- How it is supposed to be performed, what will be the outcome of each action/activity
- All artificial things are designed
- Types of design:
- Industrial design
- Interactive design
- Experience design
- Human Centered Design (HCD) which puts human needs, capabilities and behavior first, then designing around those.
- People themselves are often un-aware of their true needs and problems.
- People should feel in control
